Santarcangelo 40 (9-18 July 2010) is the second movement of Santarcangelo 2009-2011, a three-year project. The direction of this Festival, the oldest in Italy on the Research Theatre, now brings together three artists from the Romagna region who are of international standing: Chiara Guidi/Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio, Enrico Casagrande/Motus and Ermanna Montanari/Teatro delle Albe. The project sets in motion a real choral movement and presents the birth of an amplified nucleus in which various vocations, visionary, theoretical and organisational, are woven together as if in a single founding body for the theatre: supporting the whole 2009-2011 period of the three artists' work is the critical-organisational co-ordination of Silvia Bottiroli, Rodolfo Sacchettini and Cristina Ventrucci who undertake the organisational direction of the structure and are the theoretical guidelines of the project. Within shared political and cultural aims and with a high-profile artistic structure quite new to our country, different artistic choices will take shape in total autonomy over the whole three-year period.

Santarcangelo 40 - created by Enrico Casagrande/Motus with Rodolfo Sacchettini - will be influenced by an all-pervading tension, through different forms of expression, towards the artistic translation/transcription of questions, contradictions, political and social conflicts. The Festival will look "to reality" as to a reservoir, a starting point to narrate and to be narrated. How can works be built to converse with and oppose the speed, the ferocity, the wear and tear of the times in which we live? How can the theatre turn itself into an emergency score, an ethical-aesthetic reply to the harshness of the present? How can it be an outward glance, in movement towards something "open"? What questions can be asked of the mechanisms of representation, of the logic of the live performance, of the role of the spectator?
