Number Yellow will explore neural cross-wiring and naturally occurring "short circuits" of the human brain to feed into a multi-disciplined art project involving live performance, 3D ambisonic sound, and animation. Collaborating with neuroscientists, we hope to explore various aspects of synesthesia and other phenomena such as the McGurk and Bouba/Kiki effect to create a piece of work making use of the performance framework Ear Cinema . Ear Cinema places audiences in the centre of 4 projector screens, 4 performance stages and a 3D ambisonic sound field creating a sensorially immersive environment. We will refer to research by VS Ramachandran and EM Hubbard (Neural cross wiring and synesthesia. Journal of Vision,1(3):67, 67a) which suggests that synesthesia is a perceptual effect and genuinely sensory, as opposed to a memory association. They propose that a single gene mutation causes increased neural cross wiring between adjacent brain areas, and that this mutation runs in families, hence the higher incidence of synesthesia in artists and poets who may be more prone to "metaphor". This gives us as artists a valuable experimental lever in exploring the neural basis of metaphor. For example, we say "disgusting" and make an expression when we see feces, a process mediated by the ventromedial frontal lobe of the brain. By exploring a deeper understanding of this phenomena, Modus intends to create an 'artificial cross-wiring' experience for audiences using an inter-disciplinary methodology between film-makers, sound artists, dancers, cognitive scientists, and programmers, with an experienced directorial overview to create a cohesive installation/performance art piece.
