THE UNCERTAIN SCENE
[LA SCENA INDETERMINATA]

The uncertain scene
Reformatting the performative event

The research starts off from the Heisenberg uncertainty principle and his theories related to time as an infinite matrix.
In quantum mechanics, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle states that certain pairs of physical properties, like position and momentum, cannot both be known to arbitrary precision. That is, the more precisely one property is known, the less precisely the other can be known.
The uncertainty principle is related to the observer effect, with which it is often conflated.

The approach to the scientific principle in not conceived as "taking inspiration from", but as a substantial application of the scientific theories to the parameters of the scene and a direct affection on the modalities and the unspoken rules of the theatre.
This influence will directly touch both the microscopic universe of the dance acting through the study of the movement in relation to the pairs of physical properties in relation to the matrix language and the macroscopic one, redefining the frame and the label of the theater event.

One of the aim is indeed to discuss and modify the format itself of the performative action applying the uncertainty principle and more in general the structure of experimental method not only to the backstage process of creation, but to the piece, in the scene.
The Time of the action will be determined live in relation to contingent events, and is the salient aspect of the performative arts, that are extended in duration and ephemeral. The uncertainty factor of the time becomes the visual modality of the audience, analyzed through a series of point of view and different aspects to be able to scan how the fruition is developing. The priority is given to the time of contingent perception instead of a preventive coercive decision of the author.
A direct consequence is the discussion of the role of the choreographer/author and the ethical and political system of the theater event, making it be adherent to the real conditions of the present in each single performative moment. The temporal choices are "subletted" to the audience not through aleatoric and ludic tasks but in a unconscious democracy of the scene.

This process is parallel to the one happened as a consequence of Heisenberg theories in the ways of approaching reality and nature. Is fallen the paradigm of technical control of nature, that from a passive victim of the mechanistic representation and from object to understand and dominate becomes a reality not separable and not apart from us.

The show is taking place in the framework of the project "Focus on Art and Science in the Performing Arts" with the support of Culture Programme of the European Commission.
